F' Everything, We're Doing Five Blades
I generally make no secret to anyone that will listen that I am a big fan of what Denny and Drew are up to over at Experimental Homebrewing; I was tickled pink when I managed to wrangle Drew down to come and talk Saison to my homebrew club The Society of Barley Engineers. Never one to let an opportunity for good content go to waste, Drew brought his recording equipment and sat me and 2016 Homebrewer of the Year winner Nick Corona down to talk about homebrewing in San Diego. Holy cow, what happened to 2015, amirite!? It was a big year, but it somehow managed to zip by faster than I even noticed. Overall I am feeling pretty good with how the year turned out: I managed to hit or get close to many of my goals and even accomplished a few I had not even considered. Minus a bit of a gap during the summer (which is not prime brewing season anyway) I was able to post pretty consistently all year long–I feel like I am finally getting into the swing of things! That said, join me as I take a look at my reflections and resolutions for 2016. It is gonna be a great year! 🙂

Finally got word back from the BJCP Exam center regarding my Judging Exam… I passed with flying colors! High marks across the board, minus the Weizen scoring accuracy. I am not sure what happened there, I remember it being really bad, but I guess the exam judges thought it was okay–oh well! I only need one more judging point to get promoted to Certified so it might be time to go look for a competition to judge.

The new year is upon us: a time to look back and a time to look forward. It is a bit shameful to say, but as someone who works making WordPress I will be the first to admit that in the past I was not a good blogger. Though I “started” this site almost two years ago, it was only until my experiences at the 2014 Beer Blogger’s Conferences in Dublin and San Diego that I finally got the moxie to start writing and publishing real articles. I have been inspired by the large group of really great bloggers out there and feel challenged to step up my game for 2015. So here they are, my reflections and resolutions for 2015.
As my first official post I’d like to address a question that folks ask my with some frequency: what is the origin of your sites’s name? You see, a lot goes into naming something: the name summarizes the expectations and aspirations of the object that is encapsulates. I wanted to chose a name that motivated me to be bold, to take chances, and to fly in the face if everything that I already thought possible. Here it is, the secret origin of Five Blades Brewing!
What part of this don’t you understand? If two blades is good, and three blades is better, obviously five blades would make us the best f’ing razor that ever existed. Comprende? We didn’t claw our way to the top of the razor game by clinging to the two-blade industry standard. We got here by taking chances. Well, five blades is the biggest chance of all.
